Despite its ingenuity, the piano was not an immediate hit. Indeed, the musical world was not to see the full impact of Cristofori's invention until long after his death. For the last few years of his life, he reverted to manufacturing spinets. However, other instrument-makers saw the potential of the pianoforte and, within a few years, a promising industry had established itself, albeit not in Italy. Among the key players in this burdgeoning period of piano development were Gottfried Silbermann, Gottlieb Schroter and Jean Marius.
